Sheriff White

Pete Betz is a longtime historian of the area and President of Montgomery County Historical Society, Curator Dorn Regional History Collection at FMCC.

Alexander White, Tryon County's first sheriff, wasn't Sir William Johnson's choice.   Governor Tryon appointed him, and Johnson knew he had to accept him.  The beginning of the Revolution led to the Loyalist White's downfall, via a political power struggle with the Tryon County Committee of Safety, a struggle White simply could not win.  How White lost his office and what happened to him afterward is the topic of this talk
