Taverns of Independence

Join us this Saturday, April 11th, at 1 PM at the Fort Plain Museum, 389 Canal Street, Fort Plain, NY 13339, for Taverns of Independence. Free for members, $5 for non-members.

Museum Chairman, Norm Bollen will highlight the colonial taverns of the middle Mohawk Valley and their role establishing the independence movement in Tryon County. Taverns were the communication hubs in their day and acted as forums for citizens to debate the merits of independence. They were the headquarters of the independence movement that made the revolution possible.

Norm Bollen is Chairman of the Board of the Fort Plain Museum and Historical Park. He is the former President of the Mohawk Valley Museums Consortium and is President of Mohawk Country, Inc., a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Mohawk Valley history. The group works to expand tourism in Montgomery County by promoting the preservation of historic colonial structures in the Mohawk Valley.

Bollen is the author of George Washington and the Mohawk Frontier, which tells the story of the American Revolution in the Mohawk Valley. Mr. Bollen grew up in Fort Plain, NY during the 1960’s when the Fort Plain Museum began operation just up the street from his home. When he isn’t researching history, he spends time hiking in the Adirondacks. He is a retired restauranteur with a degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management and began his “second career” in heritage tourism in 2006. He has been a resident of Amsterdam, NY for over 30 years.
